"21 Guns" song lyrics by Green Day

21 guns lyrics by green day from 21 century breakdown

21 Guns lyrics by Green Day from the album 21st Century Breakdown

21 Guns is the second single from Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown album. The song was featured in Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen and was one of Green Day's biggest ever chart success.

Lyrically, the song is about patriotism - living and dying for your country. The number 21 is a reference to the gun salute that is often given at burials for fallen soldiers.

Billie-Joe is asking the listener to wonder whether patriotism is worth it, and if it is who benefits. In effect, the song's meaning is that it is an anti war lament - but that number 21 also ties in with the 21st Century theme of the album - the issues 21st Century Breakdown consider are largely religious and the abuse of political power and those two concerns often lead to war.

Consider George Bush's war on Iraq to supposedly take Weapons of Mass Destruction from the control of Saddam Hussein. This was a fiction and the Bush administration took advantage of it to their own agenda - so, when Billie-Joe's lyrics are wondering if it's worth going to war, it can be seen in part as the reflections of a soldier who has taken part in the Iraq war and seen the personal cost.

Or it's from the point of view of a family member or friend who has seen the direct affect of war on a soldier. The effect of leaving him or her in ruins, for the gain of the Bush Administration. A lot of this kind of issue was covered by Green Day in their American Idiot song.

"21 Guns" song lyrics by Green Day

Do you know what's worth fighting for,
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
And you feel yourself suffocating?
Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You're in ruins

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

When you're at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul
Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn't pass
Nothing's ever built to last
You're in ruins.

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

Did you try to live on your own
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire?
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone

When it's time to live and let die
And you can't get another try
Something inside this heart has died
You're in ruins.

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

  10. Yawn...one of the worst songs on the album. Green Day needs to steer clear of this type of song or they will quickly become predictable and irrelevant.

  12. "Green Day needs to steer clear of this type of song or they will quickly become predictable and irrelevant."

What? This is exactly the type of song that will KEEP them relevant! As for predictable, well, did you expect to find a song such as Last Night On Earth on this album? 'Cause I certainly didn't! Songs like these tend to have a much longer shelf-life than songs joking about masturbation and using drugs!

  21. the melody in this song reminds me of the song "Africa"

  22. I hear "All The Young Dudes" in the chorus, what do you think?

  23. This song, Before the Lobotomy and the non LP Social Distortion cover of "Another State of mind" are the best from this recording session. I never thought anyone would cover Social Distortion as well as Greenday! Just as good or slightly better!

  25. Are you all kidding me?????? I think greenday is great too but come on.... First off the song is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY TOOOOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOOW!!! Billy wines through the song like a 4yr old who was denied a cookie. It has the most predictable and uncreative lyrics. The guitar and drums are boring as hell. Maybe you have to be 17 and depressed to enjoy it. But you'll be depressed by the end of the song anyway. Give your head a shake Billy, I' disapointed.

  27. This song certainly isn't depressing, it's hopeful! By the end you have to feel some sense of hope! Great song, great message, go Green Day.

  30. I agree with anonymous above. I heard 21 Guns on the radio the other day and the chorus sounded familiar. It took my brain a little while to recognize, but the chorus sounds like 'All The Young Dudes' by Mott the Hoople (written by David Bowie).

Not that that is bad, I guess, but the song is kind of predictable. It's trying to be Boulevard of Broken Dreams but not quite making it to the same standard.

  31. The lyrics are so beautiful. Its different from what they usually play and thats whats going to make this the biggest hit of this album.

  36. after i heard twenty one guns a few times, I would find myself humming All the Young Dudes by David Bowie and wondering why on earth that old song had come into my head. Then I listened again to the chorus. It's the same! I think Green Day has ripped off the riff from David Bowie and should give him songwriting credit.

  40. David Bowie is credited for the song.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Not sure on your police work there Anonymous. I can't find anywhere that gives Bowie a song writing credit for 21 Guns....

Still, there's no denying the songs share a very simialr melody.
