"East Jesus Nowhere" song lyrics by Green Day

21st century break down album cover green day

"East Jesus Nowhere" song lyrics by Green Day

East Jesus Nowhere is from Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown album. It starts off Act II of the album known as 'Charlatans and Saints'

A Charlatan is a swindler or con artist type player. A saint is your mother or the one called Theresa (though technically she's not a saint, despite the Pope's efforts).

The song's lyrics a mess of metaphors about the Christian Church, and a rant against those who have turned reglion into an income and about politicians that abuse their powers to promote religious social policies. The opening versus even appears to suggest that there's nothing anybody can do about it because religion and those in power are too far entrenched.

East Jesus No Where lyrics

Raise your hands now to testify
Your confession will be crucified
You're a sacrificial suicide
Like a dog that's been sodomized
Stand up! - All the white boys
Sit down! - All the black girls
You're the soldiers of the new world

Put your faith in a miracle
And it's non-denominational
Join the choir we will be singing
In the church of wishful thinking

A fire burns today
Of blasphemy and genocide
The sirens of decay
Will infiltrate the faith fanatics

Oh bless me lord for I have sinned
It's been a lifetime since I last confessed
I threw my crutches in "The river
Of a shadow of doubt"
And I'll be dressed in my Sunday best

Say a prayer for the family
Drop a coin for humanity
Ain't this uniform so flattering?
I never asked you a God damned thing

A fire burns today
Of blasphemy and genocide
The sirens of decay
Will infiltrate the faith fanatics

Don't test me
Second guess me
Protest me
You will disappear

I want to know who's allowed to breed
All the dogs who never learned to read
Missionary politicians
And the cops of a new religion

A fire burns today
Of blasphemy and genocide
The sirens of decay
Will infiltrate the inside

  3. There has been much propaganda and conspiracy theories that put blame on the Christian faith. This along with the bullshit thats been going on in the world, especially the corruption in power may lead one to feeling doubtful in there faith. However the whole story is not told, the truth about those intending to destroy the catholic church especially. Those in power want to make Christianity into something it is'int, we are coming to believe in a warped political correctness and not accept the truth about many things. It is not Green Days fault that they are
seeing things the way they are, especially regarding Christianity, the truth about the deliberate destruction is not known and they are ignorant.

  4. You're wrong. If you just listen to THE VERY NEXT SONG, you'll listen to GD comment about Muslims and Jews going to war for religious reasons. They aren't targeting Christianity specifically with 21st Century Breakdown (although they are with this song). They are making a statement about the effect religious fanatacism has on war. It's not hate speech, it's artistic commentary. Take the whole album in before you say dumb things.

  6. Some people are just waiting to be offended. Real 'Christians' know how to deal with these kinds of things, and real 'Christians' don't want to rub their religion in your face.

  7. I wish bands, etc would get their facts right, because if you look at the facts - many more people have been killed in the name of Atheism than Religion.

    --snip--
China under Mao Tse Tung, 26.3 million Chinese. According the Walker Report, 63.7 million over the whole period of time of the Communist revolution in China. Solzhenitsyn says the Soviet Union put to death 66.7 million people. Kampuchea destroyed one third of their entire population of eight million Cambodians. The Chinese at two different times in medieval history, somewhere in the vicinity of 35 million and 40 million people. Ladies and gentlemen, make note that these deaths were the result of organizations or points of view or ideologies that had left God out of the equation. None of these involve religion. And all but the very last actually assert atheism.

    --snip--

    and...

    --snip--

It is true that it's possible that religion can produce evil, and generally when we look closer at the detail it produces evil because the individual people are actually living in a rejection of the tenets of Christianity and a rejection of the God that they are supposed to be following. So it can produce it, but the historical fact is that outright rejection of God and institutionalizing of atheism actually does produce evil on incredible levels. We're talking about tens of millions of people as a result of the rejection of God.

    --snip--

But don't let the facts get in the way of a (good?) song..

  8. Yet another kick ass song. Sing it Green Day, sing it. All religion is bullsh*t and always will be.

  9. I.M. Fletcher : your facts are only pointing out nations that proned atheism (communists, pretty much). However, you forget that these nations did not kill *in the name* of atheism. These nations proned atheism, but the reason why they fought was not religious belief.
"Medieval China" was, as far as I know, a religious nation, as well.

I DO agree with you that atheism is just as bad as religion, though. Just not your facts.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree. Also, I have a degree in Russian studies and I can tell you that Solzhenitsyn's facts were skewed (and biased, as are all "facts"). Not to say that Stalin didn't kill millions and he would have killed more had he lived longer.

But there is a huge difference between Christianity and Fundamental Christians (just as there is a difference between Islam and Fundamental Muslims and Judaism and Fundamental Jews). They claim to represent Christ's love and then kill in his name. That's "blasphemy and genocide" in my opinion.

  11. Beastly song, its not a hate song against christians, it is just aimed at how religion doesn't have a good effect on the world (not always)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Actually religion DOES have a good effect on the world most of the time. I see at the top of this page that Mother Theresa is referenced; if it weren't for her and her nuns then the unloved, the lepers, and the poor would still be dying like dogs in the streets of Calcutta. No one else cares/cared enough to do anything about them.

And they are only one of the many Christian organizations that do great work around the world (like Caritas, TEAR Fund, Habitat For Humanity and World Vision, just to name a few), not to mention the Christian-run hospitals, schools and orphanages.

Everyone likes to bring up the wrongs done 'in the name of religion' but people just take for granted all the good works. And it's not just what they do - it is the change that God brings into their lives.

Don't believe me? Read As an atheist, I truly believe Africa needs God written by an atheist from The Times.

    Here's a snippet -

I used to avoid this truth by applauding - as you can - the practical work of mission churches in Africa. It's a pity, I would say, that salvation is part of the package, but Christians black and white, working in Africa, do heal the sick, do teach people to read and write; and only the severest kind of secularist could see a mission hospital or school and say the world would be better without it. I would allow that if faith was needed to motivate missionaries to help, then, fine: but what counted was the help, not the faith.

But this doesn't fit the facts. Faith does more than support the missionary; it is also transferred to his flock. This is the effect that matters so immensely, and which I cannot help observing.

and stfu you religious fuck tards

    ReplyDelete
  14. @I.M. Fetcher :
Any kind of fanatism should be avoided... That is what I meant when I said "atheism is as bad as religion".
I think that you needn't be Christian to do good. Atheists have morals, too, you know ; at least some of them. But you get too hooked up on the "absolute truth", then atheist and religious fanatism are both dangerous. In the end I think it depends on individuals rather than on the group of belief you belong to... Although I agree that Christianity usually preaches a rather positive message... At least to my mind.

  17. I think you all miss the point of the song. I believe that the only way to ive is by gods laws, not the way men and the churches have corrupted his word. I don't find the song offensive becuase it is cleary speaking of the fanatics and any fanatic is a bad one. So I think the faith and faithless should find something else to argue about. I like the lyrics.

    ReplyDelete
  18. its not safe to assume what Green Day means in their lyrics...

  19. Religious fanaticism is different than normal religous practice. When someone attacks say Christian fundamentalism, and you are not a fundamentalist, you should'nt be angry. Religion itself I think is not needed in modern society, but fanaticism is bad in every form and every sensisable religious person should be agaisnt fanaticism.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I am a christian and i don't care what an artist implies with his song, i like the tune and i know what I myself think about my religion so i don't see why other christians need to get angry about what an atheist thinks and why an atheist should get angry about what a christian thinks, i think what a lot of these christians are saying is wrong but also a lot of what the atheists are saying, especially the ones telling religious people to fuck off.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It is interesting how mentioning religion pulls out the best and worst of us. When songs attack the Church, it becomes a dated song to me. In the Christian Church today, a current contemparary swing is happening. Powerful leaders such as Francis Chan, Jim Brown and more have heard how preaching Christ in someones face (known as the blow horn guy) is not acceptable and not well received. The Church in the name of Christ is evolving to be more Christ like. You are to be loved and not judged know matter where you are in faith or how you are living your life, it is your choice, we are just there to help you when you need it. When I read these types of lyrics, it just feels dated like around the 1940 style Church. But man I gotta say, Green Day does know how to lay the music down with the best of them, they are a close runner to my all time favorite AC/DC. Yes, Christian can appreciate good music to! You have a choice, accept Christ or not, you are loved either way. I won't be coming back to this site, not even sure how I got here, so your comments won't be read by me.

  22. Green Day is simply poitning out that religion is a a large root cause of turmoil in the world. this album WAS NOT aimed at religion, but at RADICALS and RADICAL RELIGION. Not just the evils of radical christianity but of islamic and hasidic judaism and every other radical bullshit that exists. Religion today drives genocide, hate, discrimination, and fear.I myself am a roman catholic and see exactly what these gents are talking about. Green Day did such a great job with this album and continues to impress me.

  23. religion is just another millionaire bussines to fuck us all, I respect religions but they just confuse people and divide them, if we´re all "brothers and sisters" why are we killing us each other??? everybody thinks that they have the "truth", and based on that fact they try to control the fanatics lives and judge everyone else....BUSHIT, there must be a god, but religions don´t get us close to him and I think that´s what green day´s trying to say, they´re not attacking god, just the corruption in all religions, not just christians or catholics, all of them that´s my opinion

  27. Wow! This stream was entertaining. Try to imagine an album criticising "radical" homosexuals who march in parades and do lewd acts in said parades in support of their agenda. The people who produced the album would be charged with hate crimes or at the minimum would ilicit protests and vitriol wherever they went. I believe in free speech, but please...stop trying to convince anyone that this album is not a well orchestrated hate bomb against religion. It's Green day's right, but they are haters--lyrically.

    ReplyDelete
  28. they're not haters- they are simply being realistic. look around you, and if someone says they don't see what green day is saying, we're all equally screwed. it has nothing to do with indivual religious beliefs, rather the fact that they all add together, and everyone believes in something different and those who are fanatics are the reason you see hate, genocide, and so many wars and terrible things today- even if the intent is good. and this is not saying that religious groups don't do good things in any way. simply that when so many people believe in something so fanatically there is going to be problems. i love this song, because green day is trying to warn the world and the funny thing is, only so many people will listen.

    ReplyDelete
  29. A fire burns today
    Of blasphemy and genocide
    The sirens of decay
    Will infiltrate the faith fanatics....

the reason all of this is related to a fire, is because blasphemy and genocide are spreading rapidly just like a wild fire. now blasphemy is sipmly saying that under one god- everyone has a skewered idea from what else believes in. thus, most people in religion are under a god, and cannot accept that god is seen differently in everyones eyes.
eventually, while none of these faith fanatics will realize what theyre doing- and even if they do, it will be very challenging to accomplish anything. any most of them dont, while theyre are clear signs in front of them of what is happening.

and a majority of the other comments ("i wanna know who's allowed to bread" and "missionary politicans") though gd may seem to be hating on christians- they're simply pointing out that christians have been the ones with major publicity on saying whats right and wrong by the bible (though it is personally interpreted) and missionaries go around trying to convice you theyre religion is right over yours.
again, pointing out that few religious fanatics can accept anyone else thinks differently then them.

then we get to the "don't test me, second guess me, protest me, you will disappear"
again pointing out that everyone thinks they're right and everyone else is wrong. and in all of this disagreement, so many wars have started, and people, in essence, have "disappeared" because we can't respect each others beliefs and the fact that no one knows for sure who is right or wrong. yet every day we die for what we each believe, because we refuse to think for one second that it is okay for someone else to believe something different.

believing in something is fabulous- it gives people hope and comfort. but when fanatics take it to a different level of beleif, it does damage that can never be undone

    ReplyDelete
  30. i like how the phrase about confession and the crutch of believing you'll be saved (which is funny, because in gd's live concert, they shouted out "who wants to be saved") and saying how tons of people don't believe in something until they need it. the crutch is the belief, and he doubted it for a bit. then something bad happens and you instantly believe in it and are "saved" and you defend it like crazy for your own selfish reasons.

  31. I seen both side of the story and i noticed liberals lye alittle bit more I use to like green day but if they are taking one side they are hypocites to today i boycott them because They are following this secret agenda by the liberal media that everything is christianity but i notice (i threw my faith away for awhile) The world was more darker and more lies, These lies being feed by the liberals of hope and peace for everyong (well secretly turning certain people away \who they do not like well screaming hypocritzy at them, to make themselves look like the good guys. Now i realize i have have seen too many lies especially for the liberal media.I am not a conservative or a liberal but the fact is when the kettle is calling the pot black when it is self is black is pointless and worse then the kettle itself, So i love green days music but as long as they are ignorant to what really is happpening in this world. I used to be anti corporate american till i got a job at customer service and noticed have one and their own mothers were ripping the stores off, if you do not want to be ripped off america stop rippintg them off first we AMERICAN CITIZENS(not corporate not the rich and famous but average joes) did this to ourselves and green day is taking christians are evil when their the ones who don't even conmtrol the world anymore but liberals Iranians are getting killed in iran because the liberal media said the leader cheated whether he did or not is not the question but innocent people are getting killed for this "liberal agenda" I honestly am hopin g north korea attacks us to wake our arrogant asses up we are thye ones lying and are in denial

  32. Have you ever seen people try and talk religion? honestly...it is one of the WORST subjects. People fight over their religious beliefs ALL the time. Everyone has the right to believe what they want without someone wanting to rip their throat out for it. Green Day has their right to say and believe what they want without being jumped on by jerks who feel that what they are saying is wrong. If it's your belief, it's never wrong...different maybe...but not wrong! No one is making you listen to it, if you don't like the lyrics then just leave it alone...it's not meant for you anyway!

  34. so everyone gets really annoyed when people constanly sing about love, but when people sing about religion everyone still gets annoyed. Anyway if you dont like their songs why moan about them??? you've obvously got nothing better to do than point out what is wrong in their songs. Maybe they do talk about religion but it's from their point, no one else's.
basically another great song that is just them singing from their point of view.

    ReplyDelete
  35. A lot of you missed the -entire context- of the -entire album-.
It's about the end of the world as we know it and the story of two people fighting injustice.

The band is telling a story. This is just another part of the story. Its meaning can, has, and will be debated, but it doesn't really have a huge amount of bearing on the current state of the world. (Just what it might seem the world is headed for.)

(Personally, I like to see it as Gloria reflecting on how her past faith in religion never did shit for her, and how it doesn't have a place in the "new world," or the fight that's raging on, but that's me. And before anyone decides to say that's offensive to religious and/or people, I'm a religious Christian myself.)

  36. Reguardless to all the previous comments, and you all make really good points. Let's get to the lyrics. " join the choir we'll be singing, in the church of wishful thinking." Ok, when I hear "wishfull thinking" somebody is mostly throwing the odds in your face. They didn't target any religion, they said Church (place of worship). Its clear they're atheist from that line alone. Basically their calling everyone who believes in any religion naive (let's be real). Then they speak on the fanatics which is all good, because they are the reason why so many were killed and harmed behind religion gone too far. I finally understand, thank you all =)

Aside from all that..I still don't get " white boys stand up, black girls sit down." Any comments on that one? ..just so id know. Thank!

  37. Yeah I agree with the song. I think that religion is B.S. And most people only want to believe because they are afraid of what happens after death.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The thing is that people think the song is going against religion, but if you listen to the entire CD thinking about what the songs mean, you might find that they all seem to tie into one story, or at least most of them. First he has no religion, then he finds strength for religion, then he screws religion and goes against it as the next song seems to be against muslims and jews.

    ReplyDelete
  39. religion is not bull shit in any way... if there was never religion... one could argue that society and structure would never had been produced among people. Most of our conscience and morales come from our ancestors and their religions. Atheism and especially hate against religions is very dangerous to yourself and the society... and people dont seem to realize the importance of believing in truth and justice over random chance and savageness. However... religious fanaticism is what ruins our hope and provokes these haters ideas. Green day is ignorant in many aspects... but they are 100% correct that men taking their ideas and shading their eyes with their rediculous fanatic ideas. People need to respect Religion and God and learn from their good teachings and morales... but they also need to open their minds and understand that you control your destiny and your actions... no God or force will do that for you. Religious fanatics are crazed and should not be used as good examples of religion.

Thank you Green Day for another great song for us to enjoy musically and thoughtfully... however your punk upbringing is not a satisfactory form of education... as much as you may think.

  43. obviously nobody knows for sure if God is real or not, so arguing is pointless. If God is real, there are many things that don't make sense; why don't all prayers work, etc. But if he isn't realy, there are many things that don't make sense, or it's possible we don't know yet; what happened before the big bang, how does evolution explain no partial crosses between any animals, or how did the human eye/ brain form? Chances are very low. But either way stop arguing, Green Day is great, and seem to think religious wars are stupid, which I think is true. But whatever, it's a great song, and so is pretty much every one of Green Day's, even though many of the things they say I don't believe in

  44. I think that They just as Us have an Opinion that they CAN xpress the way they wanted it. besides their are pointing their view I think that the criticals aren´t or shouldn´t been about the religion or atheism, is about the humanity wanting control and power, is just like saying that a gun is bad, a gun is a piece of metal, is not the gun who kills is the human being who fires the trigger, the problem is not the religion or ateishm, is the people behind it!

  45. This song makes prefect sense. Even if i am not christian, i know that many young people dont think of church as important and many elderly have lost faith in god cuz he hasnt done anything "MAJOR"

  46. You know, looking through these comments, there were a lot of good points made. But something only a few people seemed to realize is that Atheists have a different view than religious people, and all Atheists have their own separate views, all religions have separate views, and all the people within those religions have their separate views. And then there are the people like me who are in between; not of any religion but not atheists or not open to religion. You can't make general statements or depict the world in black and white when it comes to these kinds of things and expect it to be taken at face value. I think of the view on religion and atheism like the view on chihuahuas. Lots of people hate chihuahuas, but it's not the dog itself that's hated so much as the types of people most commonly associate with them. In the same way, people have somehow learned to view religion in the same way we do the stereotypical religious fanatics and atheism in the way we view the stereotypical atheism fanatic, both of whom few people like because they're constantly trying to cram their beliefs down your throat. I think, and this is my personal opinion and by no means should be seen as me trying to dictate my opinion as fact, that this song is mostly about how religion fanatics are bad because they're the ones who start religion wars, but people see this song as saying religion itself is bad because the two are so closely related in their mind.

All I'm trying to say is that people shouldn't try to see a world full of color purely in black and white.

  47. Well my eyes got tired tryin to read all the posts but here is my 2 cents ANYTHING THAT IS EVIL IS NOT OF GOD AND NOT RELATED TO GOD SIMPLY ....THE LORD IS ALL ABOUT PEACE, LOVE AND KINDNESS AND THE LORD SAYS THOSE WHO ARE NOT WITH HIM ARE AGAINST HIM SOOO ANYTHING OTHER THAN LOVE PEACE AND KINDNESS IS NOT OF HIM!!!!!!!!! ALL OTHER RELIGIONS THAT SAY THEY FOLLOW GOD BUT ARE CAUSING THESE PROBLEMS DO NOT MIX THEM UP WITH TRUE FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST!! AND YOU MUST REALIZE SOME PEOPLE SAY THAT THEY ARE CHRISTIANS WHEN THEY ARE NOT AND THEY TWIST THE LORD'S WORD WITH THEIR EVIL MINDS!! THUS, FINDING REASONS TO CAUSE TURMOIL. I REALLY LOVED GREEN DAY BEFORE THIS SONG BUT NOW IM CONFUSED ABOUT THIS SONG'S MEANING SO I DON'T WANT TO BE LISTENING TO SOMETHING THAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT EXACTLY THE ARTIST'S MEANING AND THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE AGAINST GOD...

PS TO ARTISTS IF YOU ARE GONNA WRITE SOMETHING ABOUT GOD MAKE YOUR MEANING CLEARER OR GO DO A INTERVIEW ABOUT THE MEANING OF THE SONG AND THAT SAVE ALOT OF ARGUMENT ALSO GOD IS LOVE NOT WAR SO DON'T GET HIM EVOLVED...READ THE KING JAMES VERSION 10 COMMANDMENTS BEFORE U MIX HIM IN ANOTHER 1 OF MANS WAYS

  48. reading all these untrue comments about god really makes me so sad. God is Love so He would not cause all these problems .it is mans fault ! oh to answer an earlier blog the Lord has done many Major things your mind just isn't open to see them. The Lord does answer prayers but His will shall be done and sometimes the Lord has a greater plan that we cannot see at the moment. for example i prayed and prayed for a job i didn't get one but you know what i got accepted into a great college and u know if i would of gotten hired and was making good money i probably wouldn't have went to college and there are many more stories i could tell you that show God's plan for me but i did not see it at the time... i shouldn't come back to this site cuz i can go on and on :| ......i thought this site was gonna explain to me that the song was not attacking God but this site didn't so goodbye and to all those who don't know the true peace loving God i hope and pray you will get to meet a true christian so they can explain to you that all these ridiculous wars are not endorsed by God..i love and hope and pray for the best for you all..GOD BLESS (The true peace loving God bless)
